Visit to Edinburgh Zoo - 7/11/09
We took part in a Company outing to Edinburgh Zoo on Saturday 7 November. We had a very nice day for it (yes, there was a dry day in November !) and enjoyed walking around the zoo and trying to keep all the boys happy with the animals they wanted to see. We also had a session in the Education Centre where a very patient member of staff told us about the Rain Forests, and let the boys hold cockroaches ! Unfortunately no pictures from this event.
Halloween Party - 27/10/09
We held our Halloweenn party on Tuesday 27 October. Our usual round of fun and games for the boys with prizes given for the best fancy dress. Pictured below are our groups all dressed up, boys eating their doughnuts the hard way, and our fancy dress winners.
Enrolment Service - 18/10/09
Our annual enrolment service was held on Sunday 18 October, and we had 9 boys attend what was an enjoyable service by Rev John Mitchell at Bonnyrigg Parish Church. Some of the boys had Rev Mitchell (and the congregation) in stitches when answering some of his questions during the service. The boys are pictured below before attending the church.

Battalion 125 Fun Day - 7/6/09
Our final event of th year was the Battalion 125 Fun Day held at Vogrie Country Park. A day which threatened to be ruined by rain held out and remained dry, much to the relief of everyone. The boys did different activities, starting with their barbecue lunch, then palyed games hada ride on the train, played in the adventure playground, and even some basic rugby skills ! An enjoyable time had by all ! Unfortunately, no photo's of this event.
Best Anchor Boy - 2/6/09
On our final section night, we presented our Best Anchor Boy Trophy. This is decided by all the staff and is based upon attendance, behaviour and general attitude throughout the year. It wasa very difficult decisionbut the winner by a whisker was Kerr Houliston. Pictured below is Kerr receiving the shield, and also Jasanth Mathew, last years winner, receiving his small trophy he gets to keep after returning the shield. Click on the images to enlarge them.

Junior Section Display - 26/5/09
Our P3 boys were invited to the Junior Section Display where they were presented with their Promotion Certificates, as they will attend the Junior Section after the summer break. This was a fun night for them where they were able to join in the games as well. We were also surprised and delighted to learn that we had 2 winners of the 125 Anniversary picture competition at the dsiplay as well as 2 runners up ! This was independently judged ata Battalion Mid & East Group meeting, and Kerr Houliston won the Anhor Section prize, and his brother Lewis won the Junior Section prize ! THey are pictured below receiving their prizes.

Our Visitors From Kenya - 5/5/09
We were delighted to welcome two special visitors, all the way from Ngong in Kenya - Daniel and Zippy Sindiyo. Both are church elders and were involved in the Kenyan side of our Project Stedfast, helping bring the dream of the new school to reality. They also do so much more, with the Boys & Girls Brigade at Oloolua and also the Soila Maasai Girls Rescue Centre at Suswa. They are pictured here with the boys of our section.

Museum Of Flight- 14/3/09
Well, it was cold and very windy, but it was dry ! And thankfully, almost all of our activities were indoors ! We started with a visit to some very old aircraft and then went to visit Concorde. We also visited the top aircraft hangar, had a storytelling session, played "old games", tried on old airmen's uniform, had a trip round the airfiled on the "train" and had a paper aeroplane competition ! An action packed day.

Section Photograph - 13/1/09
In preparation for the Project Stedfast trip to Kenya, we were asked to take photograph of the section. Unfortunately we had a couple of boys and 1 member of staff missing, but here is the result:

Three Wise Men and a Baby - 18/12/08
In place of a fully fledged Chrismas Party (we still had a Christmas games night), we took 9 boys to this theatre production by the Saltmine Theatre Company at Liberton High School. It turned out to be a later night than planned but all the boys enjoyed themselves. They were also comlimented on how well they behave and enjoyed themselves, so well done to them all !
BB Capers 2008 - 4-6/12/08
10 boys took part in our bi-annual concert over the 3 nights, performing an adaptation of the Zacheous story and singing the song. The boys went down extremely well and should be rightly proud of themselves. Pictures can be found in our BB Capers 2008 slideshow.
Indian School Sponsorship - 4/11/08
We had a visit from our Treasurer, Eric Lamb, who came to talk to the boys about our link with the Lady Marium Navik school in India (see the link in the menu on the left). We sponsor 4 children at the school, and Eric has just returned from visiting there and gave a slideshow to the boys.

Groups - 4/11/08
Well, pictures of them dressed up for Hallowe'en, so I thought we should show you them dressed "normal". Can you tell who was who ?
Hallowe'en Party - 28/10/08
We held our Hallowe'en Party on 28 October 2008. Here are pictures of the boys in Fancy Dress, some of their games and prizewinners.

Enrolment Service - 12/10/08
8 boys were able to make it to our annual Enrolment Servie, held at Lasswade Parish Church. 6 are pictured, while another met us en route and another at the church. It was an enjoyable and relaxed service from Rev Cook. More pictures can be found here.

Junior Section Display - 6/6/08
We attended the Junior Section Display and Presentation Of Award. 5 boys out of 7 were able to make it and be presented with their Promotion Certificates, as they will be attending the Junior Section after the summer break. The 2 other boys will receive theirs at Junior Section.

Best Anchor Boy - 3/6/08
On our final night of the session, we invited the parents of the boys in at the night for the presentation of our Best Anchor Boy Trophy. This was a difficult decision due to the lower than usual number of boys, meaning we knew each boy that little better. Our eventual winner was Jasanth Mathew, pictured below.

Annual Outing to Almond Valley Heritage Centre - 24/5/08
We returned to Almond Valley for annual our outing this year, hoping for a repeat of the glorious weather we had in 2006. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Overcast and cool for much of the day, but thankfully dry. This didn't stop us having a good time though, exploring the museum - even going down their mine !, playing in the adventure zone, having a tractor ride, digging for "stones and bones", riding go-karts, playing on the bouncy castle, having a train ride, seeing a goat milked, and lastly, visiting the shop ! Oh, and a packed lunch in there somewhere as well ! All in all, a really good day out, if a little on the cool side for the end of May ! See the pictures below for some of the activities.
Well, it may not look like we have been doing much as we have had no "events" as such. However, the Anchor Section have been busy working away for their badges over the last few weeks. We have now presented the 3rd and final Anchor Award, the Blue badge to 5 of our P3 boys, with 1 just about to get it and 1 boy who has only been with us a few months about to get his 2nd award the Red badge - very well done is such a short space of time ! Our 3 P2 boys all have their first award, the Green badge, and are now working towards their 2nd award, the Red badge. They will finish this award early in the 2008/09 session. See photo's below for some of the things we have been doing - general games in the hall, rounders outside and the badge presentation.
Indian School Sponsorship - 8/1/08
You may have spotted the link on the left for our Indian School Sponsorship web page. It gives details of the school and the children we sponsor at the school, which is just outside Mumbai.
Mr Lamb, our Treasurer, has links to the school through his work and came to tell the boys all about it, and brought in some lovely artefacts from his visits, and also pictures and letters sent to us by the children. These can be seen on their respective pages. The following week, we made cards for Mr Lamb to take back to India on his next visit for the children.

Christmas Games Night - 18/12/07
As we had just been to the theatre, we had a simple games night as our final night before Christmas. It was of course Chrismas themed, but not "officially" a party. We also had some VERY delicious cakes, gingerbread men, and many other goodies for which many thanks go to Lewis Phillips mum, who provided these for us. Again, no pictures as I forgot my camera, and keep forgetting my phone has one built in !
Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat - 16/12/07
In place of a "proper" Christmas Party, we joined our Junior Section, and other Companies from the Mid and East Group of the Edinburgh Battalion, in an organised group visit to the Edinburgh Playhouse theatre to see this brilliant show. All the boys enjoyed it, and were all very well behaved (just as well, as Mrs Marshall from the Junior Section works there and would not have been happy otherwise !). Unfortunately, no photos of the group.
Enrolment Service - 2/12/07
7 boys were able to make it to our annual Enrolment Servie, held at Bonnyrigg Parish Church. It was, as usual, an enjoyable service from Rev Mitchell, coupling it in with the start of Advent.

Hallowe'en Party - 30/10/07
We held our Hallowe'en Party on 30 October 2007. Here are pictures of the boys in Fancy Dress.
Section History
The Anchor Section began life in the 51st as The Bonnyrigg Blues, as there was no official pre-Junior Section at that time. The name was then changed in 1980 when the Brigade officially launched The Anchor Section.
Who are we ?
The Anchor Boys are for boys who are in primary 2 or 3, generally 6 to 8 years old. Our uniform is a distinctive RED sweatshirt, and a BLUE polo shirt.
Our current staff can be found on the Staff page. We also have helpers from the Company Section.
Where do we meet ?
The 51st Bonnyrigg Anchor Boys are held on a Tuesday night in Hopefield Primary School from 6pm until 7pm, and the boys have really great fun.
What do boys do at the Anchor Boys ?
We learn about God, Jesus, and other Bible stories, and do many activities with the emphasis firmly on FUN. We also have parties at Hallowe'en and Christmas. |
![]() Let's eat - it's party time ! |
| The boys also do craft work and enjoy making things - paper aeroplanes, Mothers Day cards, Easter baskets, calendars, and many other things. They also sometimes do some cake baking. | ![]() " What do I do next ? " |
| All boys work on the Anchor Boy Activity Award Scheme. They do activities which can earn them a total of three badges over the two sessions.
The final badge they can earn is also worn on their arm-band when they go to the Junior Section, so it can be worn for years to come. |

As well as the Achievement Award, we also have the |

We also go on Trips ?
The Anchor Boys< have an outing every year where they have a lot of fun. Among the places we have visited are the Royal Museum Of Scotland in Edinburgh, The Museum Of Flight at East Fortune, Liberton Fire Station in Edinburgh, and many other places.
All in all, great fun for boys aged 6 & 7 !
