Summer Activities
May 2008

After our Easter break we moved onto our summer programme which consisted of mixed games for 2 weeks followed by a computer games night on 9th May in the school.Playstation,X Box & Nintendo Wii were the choices on offer along with interactive Ninetendo DS games so it was a high tech event ( well for the Staff anyway ).The X Box provided the football knockout which ended up as a mini league in which fashion is as important as the score ! The PS2 was all about mayhem and fighting, never quite understand the attraction I am a strictly space invader guy ! but the most fun was reserved for the Nintendo Wii which had some strange hitting styles and Scott Cummings shouting at the plasma TV almost to the point of bursting a blood vessel ! In Scotts defence he was given a dodgy controller with low batteries so I can understand his frustration.

On the 16th May we went on a cycle to Penicuik on a lovely evening with around 20 boys & staff. Of course safety is important so Mr.Thomson was in charge of this and we only had 1 accident to report......yes Mr.Thomson ! Paul came off trying to keep a branch out of the boys way unfortunately he came off and give himself a bad skint knee which required some cleaning up in Penicuik. After wolfing down some crisps, chocolate & juice the return was carried out with no further incident. No pictures of Paul's knee as it would be too graphic for the website.

23rd May we embarked on a mystery walk down Polton into Polton village upto Bilston Viaduct then 20 bags of chips & Irn Bru at the chippy in Loanhead, again a beautiful night for a energetic walk.

Our final Friday of the session took place on Friday 30th May with a games night down at Lasswade Park.Softball started us off with numerous catchers ( and fumbles ) to be had then a short break for goodies and finishing up with football. We also had a visit from Gavin Brown MSP who spent the whole evening chatting to staff & boys and it was great have such support from a member of the Scottish Parliament.

We had our outing to the Glasgow Science Centre on Sunday 1st June which turned out to be a miserable day weather wise but thankfully we were inside with a physics show ( lots of loud bangs ) 3D IMAX cinema and 3 levels of interactive stands for the boys to learn from.

All in all a great way to finish our year.

To all boys and staff many thanks for a successful session and we look forward to seeing you all in September after your summer holidays

Battalion Athletics
2nd June 2008
The Battalion athletics took place on Monday 2nd June at Pinkie playing fields. Nine companies entered and we had Sean Hadden,Cameron Fraser,Aiden Robertson,Calum Marshal & Rory Anderson. Our boys were all intermediate so the events they entered were 100m,200m,800m,long jump & shot put.
We started off well with Cameron Fraser winning both the 100m & 200m in an impressive display of strength & pace, some strange jumping technique was on display in the long jump but Cameron managed to get a 3rd place. In the shot put again Cameron excelled himself with a first place which left the sapping 800m last.A good race with Cameron taking 2nd & Rory 3rd gave us a team place of 3rd overall - great result !
Cameron Fraser was the Intermediate Battalion Champion with 3 firsts,1 second & 1 3rd from 5 events a fantastic achievement. We then had a well earned ice cream at Lucas.

Midlothian Outdoor 5's
22nd May 2008
On Thursday we entered a Junior team for the outdoor 5s at Loanhead. Team consisted of Sean Hadden,Rory Anderson,Matthew Smith,Connor Smith & Matthew Stewart. After 3 games we unbeaten the last game wound decide our destiny,if 48th Penicuik did not win we would be champions. It stayed 1 - 1 until the final 2 minutes when 48th got a goal so we were runners up on this occasion but well done on a great effort. Rock Climbing

We attended the recent Battalion organised event of rock climbing at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho. It is the biggest indoor climbing centre in the world and it is a fantastic facility.Boys had various tuition from staff on various climbing walls and ropes and it is a lot tougher than it looks.Cameron Fraser,Sean Hadden & Cameron MacDonald all commented on the quality of the site and who knows,it maybe a place for the Company to visit in the future.

BB Kitchen Nightmares?!

This session we have started to use the new Discovery Programme which was released this session - this has included the 51st cooking class ( Gordon Ramsay eat your heart out ) which has included healthy muffins cooked fresh and also designer breakfast with only the healthiest ingredients allowed. It has shown the boys a serious side to their diet and showing them basic life skills in cooking and planning a healthy menu - of course it has also been great fun !! A special thanks to Mrs Jayne Ross from Lasswade High School for giving up her time to provide teaching & equipment for our budding chefs - thanks Jayne !

51st B - Matthew Stewart,Scott MacKinnon,Ben Lannan,Ross Millar,Douglas Thomson.

51st B 4 vs. 1st/61st 0,51st B 1 vs. 65th 4,51st B 0 vs. 48th 0

It all came down to the last game with the 51st B needing a draw or win to help the 51st A win the competition & stop the 48th from lifting the shield - the game had everything - penalty, hit post & bar but the young squad held out to the final whistle to help the A team win the event on goal difference ( only 2 goals in it ) !!

It was a great day and thanks to boys in both teams for all their efforts 1st and 4th not a bad result for the 51st.

Badminton
Midlothian Group :
Badminton & Basketball

21st Jan 2007.

The 51st entered a healthy number for the Midlothian Group Badminton competition at Gorebridge Leisure centre on Sunday 21st January 2007.
Both Junior/Senior singles and doubles took place so it was a busy afternoon for all involved.
All boys did well with a good number progressing to the latter stages.
In the Junior event both Sean Hadden & Matthew Smith made it to the semi final with Sean making it to the final which he won in style. An excellent start !
In the senior singles Euan MacRitchie was a beaten semi finalist and also with Bryan Robb made it to the semi finals of the doubles event.
Back to the Junior Doubles with Calum Marshall & Ryan Collins losing out in the semi finals but Sean Hadden & Rory Anderson made it a Junior double by winning the doubles competition. A great double for Sean and his cousin Rory helped to make it a family day to remember with his partner.

After that badminton it was over to the basketball which was more a fun event. All boys took part but the Junior team lost both games 3 - 2 and the Seniors lost out 5 - 3 to bring a full day to a close.
Well done to all boys who entered it was a good spirited competition.

5-A-Side : Junior
10th December 2006.
The Edinburgh and Leith Battalion competition took place at Gracemount leisure centre. With a strong entry, the 51st were drawn a tricky tie which included a local derby with Loanhead.
A good start with 4-0 against our 1st opposition(61st Edin) and a 1-1 draw with Loanhead. In the final game of the section we were pipped 4-0 by 10th Leith. This led to a penalty shootout for a place in last 8 teams. Unfortunately we did not get through. A good showing - well done.
